Patient’s Guide to DIAGNOdent

Locating hidden decay before it destroys tooth structure is the best way to maintain dental health.

During a dental exam, your dentist does a visual inspection of your teeth, uses special tools to probe them looking for soft areas and routinely takes X-rays to find decay.

X-rays work well to find decay in between teeth and on the roots but often miss detecting decay on the tooth’s biting surface. Even a small area of decay on the biting surface can penetrate inside the tooth causing destruction from the inside out so early detection can prevent more complicated dental procedures in the future.

For this reason, Romano Dental has invested in a revolutionary new technology called DIAGNOdent.

DIAGNOdent uses harmless pulses of a small fluorescent laser to scan into the teeth to identify and measure hidden decay. It accurately detects caries – the disease that causes cavities and decay. Using DIAGNOdent, we’re able to catch problem areas before they turn into larger issues such as loss of tooth structure or loss of the tooth. When decay is caught early, fillings can be smaller and shallower and preserve more of your natural tooth.

With DIAGNOdent, a healthy tooth will have a low reading and a tooth with underlying decay will have a higher reading. Your dentist will scan a healthy area of tooth enamel to establish a baseline reading. Any suspicious areas can be monitored without repeated x-rays, harm to tissues or need for protective measures.

The DIAGNOdent scan takes place during your normal six month dental visit. Using light energy similar to that of a laser pointer, DIAGNOdent is a safe, comfortable process that takes only a few minutes to complete. It has been awarded the Seal of Acceptance by the American Dental Association.

DIAGNOdent helps provide the best oral health possible and keeps your smile healthy and happy for a lifetime.
