Brides Say “I Do” to Teeth Whitening Treatments
June is just around the corner and brides are getting ready for the big day.
Wedding photos capture the special moments including the smiles of joy and happiness. With this in mind, many brides look for a way to be sure their smile is its brightest and whitest. Teeth whitening treatments are a popular way to achieve that sparkle and shine! According to statistics from Glamour magazine, 46% of all brides in the U.S. whiten their teeth before their wedding day.
Teeth whiting is a non-invasive dental treatment used to change the color of your natural teeth’s enamel. When it comes to teeth whitening there are several options to achieve a brighter smile.
The in-office whitening procedure called Zoom or chair side bleaching is applied by a dentist. Zoom is a peroxide bleaching process that lightens discoloration of enamel by using a high powered light. The light enhances the action of the peroxide agent to bleach the teeth. On the average this procedure will whiten your teeth anywhere from two to seven shades and takes about an hour. The results are instant and the outcome is a brilliant smile.
An alternative to in-office treatment is the “at home” method using custom bleach splints. An impression is taken to make a custom-fitted mouth guard or splint which holds the bleach against the teeth. Because the mouth guard is fitted, the bleaching will be more precise than over-the-counter products. The mouth guard will not alter your tooth structure or existing dental work in any way. Peroxide, containing bleach whiteners are used each night for about 1-2 hours for a week or two. At the end of this time significant whitening will occur. When your teeth reach the brightness you want, only occasional treatment is needed to maintain your new smile.
The quickest and easiest whitening treatment uses a laser and can be completed in just 30 minutes! It’s laser bleaching called LaserSmile with EZlase Diode Laser and it’s fast, safe and effective. During the process, a hydrogen peroxide gel is activated by the laser light, penetrating the teeth enamel to give a noticeably white smile. Not all dentists have the EZlase Diode Laser but in CT you can have the procedure done at Romano Dental in Bridgeport.
Over-the-counter bleaching agents are available for purchase at drug stores and pharmacies. In many cases these only whiten a few of the front teeth unlike custom trays that whiten the entire smile. The ADA (American Dental Association) recommends having one’s teeth checked by a dentist before undergoing any whitening method since some over-the-counter products can cause harm to gums and teeth.
For very severely stained teeth, crowns or veneers may be more appropriate. Discuss the various options with your dentist.
To extend the brightness of your brilliant new smile, avoid foods that will re-stain your teeth (coffee, cola, wine) for at least 48 hours. Flossing is recommended and brushing twice daily. See your dentist for regular checkups and professional cleaning.
With a brightened smile the bride will take her groom’s breath away!
