Dental X-rays and Digital Panorex

X-rays are a vital tool for preventative dentistry. They often help the dentist detect cavities and periodontal problems before they’re seen or felt. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent more involved procedures such as root canals or crowns.

The most common x-rays taken are:

  • Bitewing: x-ray the back teeth
  • Periapical: x-ray the whole tooth from the crown to where the tooth is anchored in the jaw
  • Occlusal: x-ray extra teeth, missing permanent front teeth, cysts, abscesses, growths and clefts in the roof of the mouth
  • Panoramic: x-rays all teeth in the mouth

A Panoramic x-ray is a single x-ray film that shows the entire bone structure of the teeth and face including the sinuses and the jaw bone. The panoramic (the type of film used) or Panorex (brand name) x-ray is usually taken on the initial visit to the dental office.

Panoramic films differ from the others in that they are entirely extra-oral, meaning that the film remains outside of the mouth while the machine shoots the beam from the outside. The x-ray machine makes a complete circle of the head from one ear to the other producing a complete two-dimensional snapshot of the inside of the mouth.

Digital x-rays offer more precision since the image is viewed on a computer monitor allowing the dentist to assess the relationship between the teeth, jaw and occlusion (how the top and bottom teeth fit together). The panoramic provides the best opportunity to view pathological structures, tumors and cysts and helps the dentist evaluate wisdom teeth, TMJ, impacted teeth, extractions and implant placement.

Another benefit of panoramic x-rays is the reduced amount of exposure to radiation. Radiation exposure from digital Panorex is at least 50% less when compared to traditional radiographs.

Digital Panorex is an invaluable aid in diagnosing, treating and maintaining dental health.
