What is Soft Tissue Laser Therapy?

soft tissue laser diodeA laser beam is an extremely intense narrow parallel beam of light that vaporizes tissue.

The name laser is an acronym for Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation. From 1960 to the present the laser has made vast advancements bring technology to the dental office by creating dental applications such as the soft tissue laser. Soft tissue laser therapy gives dentists the ability to perform a variety of procedures utilizing a precise method to manipulate oral tissues.

Soft Tissue Diode Laser Therapy is the latest in laser technology and conservative gum therapy. With little or no anesthesia the diode laser offers a precise soft tissue surgery with minimal bleeding, swelling or pain. In fact, stitches are not needed following a procedure!

The diode laser precisely cuts or “vaporizes” soft tissue (called ablation) and helps it coagulate. It can kill the bacteria that cause periodontal (gum) disease while removing diseased tissue as well as stimulate healing and minimize bleeding. The diode laser delivers a narrow, pulsed beam that vaporizes diseased tissues from around the tooth and inside the gum pocket while preserving the surrounding healthy tissue.

Soft Tissue Diode Laser Applications/Procedures:

  • Reduces painful, infected and swollen gums. This procedure removes excess tissue caused by systemic disease, medication or poor oral hygiene.
  • Speeds the healing of oral mouth lesions such as canker sores and cold sores.
  • Eliminates tooth and gum sensitivity.
  • Removes benign tumors from the gums, palate, sides of cheeks and lips.
  • Reshapes soft tissue. Reduces the amount of gum that shows thereby enhancing the smile. Soft tissue reshaping may be done to gain proper shapes and forms for teeth and/or restorations.
  • Tooth Whitening. Lasers have been used during tooth whitening procedures to enhance the action of the whitening agent resulting in a faster, more effective procedure.

The use of soft tissue laser therapy is rapidly becoming part of the standard of care for initial to advanced periodontal therapy and various other soft tissue procedures.

If you’re looking for a dentist who is qualified to offer this new technology, check their credentials. Some states require a certification to use a Diode Laser but Connecticut does not so not all CT dentists are certified.

Dr. Frank Romano offers soft tissue laser therapy in his Bridgeport, CT office. He is certified in the use of the 810nm Diode Dental Laser and has received an Associate Fellowship with the World Clinical Laser Institute.
